Nguyen Tat Thanh University (NTTU) has successfully co-organized the Workshop “Designing Quality Assessment in English Language Teaching” with NEAS (Australia) to discuss building an effective English language teaching and learning assessment system according to international standards. This is also an opportunity for NTTU to update new trends in assessment system design and enhance the professional capacity of its faculty, serving as a strategic move right after the milestone where NTTU was the only Vietnamese university invited to attend the NEAS International Conference 2026 in Australia.

In the trend of educational globalization, developing a scientific and objective testing and assessment system is the most accurate measure of training quality. Recognizing this importance, Nguyen Tat Thanh University (NTTU) has recently accompanied NEAS (National ELT Accreditation Scheme) – a leading and prestigious English language teaching quality assurance organization from Australia – to implement an intensive training program.

Attending the program, on behalf of NEAS, was Mr. Richard Stevenson – Head of Quality Assurance and Professional Development. On the side of Nguyen Tat Thanh University, there was Dr. Phan Thi Viet Nam – Vice President of the University, along with a large number of staff, managers, and lecturers working and teaching at the university.

Internationalization Orientation and Output Quality Commitment

In her opening remarks, Dr. Phan Thi Viet Nam – Vice President of the University emphasized that educational quality is always one of the top priorities of Nguyen Tat Thanh University. With the orientation of continuously improving training quality according to domestic and international standards, up to now, about 80% of the University’s training programs have been successfully accredited.

Dr. Phan Thi Viet Nam stated: “This workshop is considered an important step to further improve the quality of English language teaching, promote continuous improvement, and provide learners with an international standard training environment. This is an opportunity for staff and lecturers to approach and update new knowledge in evaluating teaching effectiveness, thereby contributing to enhancing language competence for both teachers and students.”

During the intensive training session, Mr. Richard Stevenson directly shared the core principles to help NTTU’s faculty optimize language proficiency assessment tools based on international standards:

    • Constructive Alignment: Synchronizing Learning Outcomes according to prestigious reference frameworks (CEFR/GSE), classroom teaching activities, and assessment methods to accurately reflect learners’ actual competence.
    • Construct Validity: Ensuring that tests accurately and scientifically measure the practical knowledge and skills that learners have been exposed to.
    • Optimization of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs): Quantifying the quality of questions through two key academic indexes: Item Difficulty and Discrimination Index, eliminating subjective elements or guesswork.
    • Integration and Digital Transformation: Discussing flexible testing and assessment solutions, anticipating the trend of applying technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in teaching and learning.

Realizing the Goal of Making English a Second Language

Coordinating with a prestigious international organization like NEAS to raise the standards of the assessment system closely follows the spirit of Resolution No. 71-NQ/TW on breakthroughs in education and training development. This is a practical activity demonstrating NTTU’s commitment to continuously improving training quality and promoting the internationalization of education.

Through these methodical steps, Nguyen Tat Thanh University is step-by-step pioneering the construction of a multilingual academic environment with modern technology applications, ready to supply a high-quality workforce with outstanding competitive capacity in the global labor market in the new era.
